During the fall 2012 semester, senior social work majors in Hamilton Williams’ Intervention in Human Systems class joined with Father Juan Garza and the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church to organize what may have been Newton’s first-ever Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) parade. Nov. 2, also known as All Souls’ Day, is a time to honor the memories of friends and loved ones as well as celebrate Hispanic, especially Mexican, culture.

Maggie Goering, senior social work major from Hutchinson, paints the face of a young parade participant, with her friend Adam Pounds giving advice.
